condition of the car that you buy. I'll swear by '88 and '89 16-valve turbos with LH fuel injection. Other people will swear at them and lament the passing of the CIS injection. I'd love to have a 2.3 litre C900, but they just didn't make them.

There's not really one perfect C900 model and year. A friend had a base '85 4-door that was an absolute joy to drive while my base '86 was a harsh driving machine. My '88 and '89 SPGs have been pretty darned good. It's all a matter of personal preference and opinion.

Turbos are a little more difficult to change the clutch on because the turbo ducting needs to be removed, but they're so much fun to drive that the difference in clutch change time is less than negligable in comparison. From my experience with 4 C900s, there's not a significant difference in maintenance between the turbo and non-turbo.

Unless you have a condition that makes you need an automatic, 90% of us on the board will point you to the 5-speed.

Convertibles are more prone to cowl shake than non-convertibles and the tops wear out. But there is nothing like being able to drive open air. Hatches are great to have but they're not as quiet as 4-door sedans or as rigid as 2-door sedans. It's just personal preference.

The ease of living with the car depends on a few things:

- Condition of the car as you bought it
- Your degree of familiarity with the fuel system and willingness to learn new diagnostic techniques and repair techniques if you get one with a different fuel system
- Your willingness to get grease under your fingernails, cuts on your hands, and bruises everywhere.
- Just plain luck for getting one without a significant hidden flaw
- Addiction to the Saabnet C900 board (you can learn a lot here)

The one thing that 8-valve CIS cars have over the 16-valve N/A and Turbos is that the engine output is a better match to the level of power that the 5-speed transmissions were designed to, so the transmission pinion bearings will last longer.
