I just drove a 92 900S (130K) and while it had a little more poke than my NA 84 900 base (163K), it was a buzzbox with all kinds of strange sounds and vibrations. Nothin bad, just a very different feel. I guess it's also what you get used to.
IMHO, break in has a lot to do with it. We broke the 84 in on the Maine Turnpike at 75 to 80 and it remains a great cruiser at those speeds and is fine around town. A friend who got a 900 about the same time did the same. Then another friend bought one and broke it in like an old lady would. He thought something was wrong with his car after he drove the other two.
I think lots of cars have similar variations, but don't drive enough other cars to know.
