Is my 900 EMS ready for the scrap heap? Posted by Richard [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I am interested to get some opinions on this. The car is 1986 900EMS with 345000klms on the clock.
About six months ago it overheated on the highway (100kms from anywhere)and would not restart. I had it towed back to my mechanic who diagnosed a faulty ignition amplifier only putting out half the voltage that it should have. He didn't find anything wrong with the cooling system or thermostat and I had no overheating probs afterwards. At the same time I had a worn clutch replaced which was great for about two months.
Now I have to be very careful when changing gears to release the clutch gently and apply the accelerator slowly. If I don't do this it feels as though it's engaging too quickly (like if your foot slipped off the pedal) and jerks badly until I can get it under control.
Also when accelerating in the lower gears (1st & 2nd) the check engine light flashes on breifly when the clutch is depressed. The light also flashes on if I rev the engine (in neutral) but only at the top of the revs (ie. when i take my foot off the accelerator) and then dives below normal idle speed and most of the time stalls the engine.
And lastly it has started to overheat during city driving (highway driving is fine) and is not engaging the cooling fans.
Sorry for the essay. I appreciate any comments/suggestions.
Richard
