Thanks for the tips.
Come to think of it, I have been noticing signs of the pilot/release bearing failing although it never occured to me that it could be linked to surging/vibration/shuddering. It's been making noises on and off for months (light pressure on the pedal gets rid of the noise) and will definitely need replacement soon - too bad since the clutch only has about 25,000 mi on it.
The front motor mount doesn't look like it needs replacing, but is it something that is visible to the naked or untrained eye anyway? The popping out of gears and a distinct whine in 4th & 5th has not been noticed yet, but I'll keep mindful of those signs.
