You have to remove the wood panel in the rear. That exposes the round hatch that you remove to access the fuel pump assembly. You need to loosen the large hoseclamp that attaches the rubber boot to the gas tank. Because the fuel line is so short and stiff, you also need to remove the nut that attaches the line to the top of the fuel pump. Only then can you pull out the WHOLE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY (Rubber boot & Main pump & plastic canister & prepump )from the gastank. There's also a return line attached to the bottom of the plastic canister so don't remove the assembly from the car w/o disconnecting that first. But you shouldn't have to take it totally out of the car because the prepump sits on the outside of the canister and you can replace the pump while the assembly is perched atop the hole in the gastank. I think there's only 2 screws that attach the pump to the canister, and 2 small nuts that connect the leads. For peace-of-mind, disconnect the battery to avoid any sparks when you hook up the new pump.
Make sure that the return line on the bottom of the canister is attached because when it comes loose the symptoms are similar to those of a bad prepump.
