As to accelleration/longevity, I wish that I had taken more time for the 1-2 shift during the first 100K with my '92 900s. Grabbing a quick second gear has left me with some worn synchronizers, and I now let the engine drop (almost) to idle between upshifts, and match revs on downshifting. No crunching in evidence unless I don't take my time.

As to fast accelleration, I often need to merge quickly here in DC, but if I'm already going as hard as the car will go, and it's not quick enough, there isn't another car (with the possible exception of a 1987 Volvo 740GLE wagon (done that)) that I'd rather get rear-ended in...

Remember... Slow is smooth... smooth is fast...
