I have never owned a SPG, but for what it's worth I previously owned a 2002 and currently have a '83 528e as well as my 86 16v saab. The main thing is the RWD and the suspension on the german cars are more taunt in my opinion. The 2002 was really quick off the line but only had 4 speed and I always wanted an overdrive on the highway. Braking is pretty close but older BMW's are notorious for shims. Overall handling is first rate on the 2002, really fun with a good set of tread, but not really good in inclement weather (RWD). The BMW engines are easier to work on and might be more open to mods but for overall style, comfort, versaltility and road feel I love my Saab. The 2002 is really a little car. The 5 series has a nice smooth 6 in it and is first rate on for highway cruising with good room for passengers and luggage. Good luck!
