Maybe a "hum" but none-the-less its likely caused by the deterioration of the pinion bearing. Rebuild now BEFORE the pinion and the crown wheel self-destruct. If you choose to wait until the the tranny completely fails you likely will await the loss of 5th gear-when the play in shaft prevents 5th from engaging... I'd say that at 170K you've taken pretty good care of your car.
