My 83 900T did the same thing. A new cap on the expansion tank solved the problem.
Also, are you sure it drained all of the coolant or is it just that the expansion tank is empty? The system holds two gallons+ of coolant, so if it's truly dry then you probably have a leak on the lower end somewhere. A pressure test will find the culprit.
