I would suggest to remove the valve cover and replace the rubber pad and at the same time use a small mirror and check the extension on the tensioner.
On 89 and up cars it is a little bit more difficult to see the tensioner from the top because of a redesigned timing chain guide. But you can still get a glimpse of it with a mirror, and if he is such a seasoned Saab tech he knows exactly what to look for. If tensioner is extended more than 11mm between two predetermined spots, the chain and guides needs to be replaced.
I would also use a wrench on the intake cam and try to back the camshaft manually. That way he might be able to move the tensioner one more notch on the ratchet and tighten the chain a little bit.
Sometimes when the tensioner is just about to move over to the next level of the ratchet mechanism, it can make the chain noisy. By helping the tensioner over the "hump" you get it quiet again.
This though you have to know what your are doing, otherwise it is possible to overtighten the chain.
