Depends Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Wierd chain tensioning method, advice please, ryan ![]() |
That must be my most common reply.
Well, depends on what's wrong. The chain has an automatic tensioner. The tensioner works in discrete steps. If the tensioner is on the hairy edge of making that next step, turning the engine backwards does indeed help. I would do it by removing the spark plugs (to eliminate compression) and use a wrench to turn the engine backwards a couple of turns. Alternatively, you can park the car on a level surface, put the car in 5th, and rock the car backwards until the engine turns over twice. Your method would work, but it would put a pretty big strain on the gearbox, clutch, motor mounts, etc.
That's assuming the tensioner just needs a nudge to get to the next step. If the tensioner isn't working properly, or is at full extension, or the chain is loose and sloppy, then this trick won't work. But since it's cheap, it's best to try first.
Why do you assume the chain needs retensioning? Is it clattering? That could be a loose chain. It could also be bad chain guides, or not even the chain at all. A lazy hydraulic lifter, bad fuel pressure damper, and a host of other things make lots of noise in the engine that sound like a rattly chain.
