...There is three wires crimped on a plastic connector that plugs into the side of the distributor. One of the wires on my 87's rotted right where the wire crimped onto the connector. To make it harder to diagnose, the wire didn't completely separate, so sometimes it was fine but soon as engine vibration or a road bump jiggled the wire just so, it would separate enough to lose it's connection and voila!...RPM's went to "0" and car stalled. Start your car and wiggle these wires around a bit as they go into the connector. If the car stalls, you have a faily easy fix. I bought the replacement connector and little 3-wire splicing harness from the dealer for under Cdn$15 (two separate parts). Gently pry the old connector out of the recepticle on the distributor. Take your time because it's easy to crack the recepticle and then you will be needing some silicon to patch it. Cut the rotten length of wires and splice the new ones on.

This was actually the same first problem I had with the car back in 1998 and the first time I used the bulletin board to fix it. I wasn't a Do it Your Selfer then but I am now...welcome to the fold!

If this isn't the problem, don't worry...we've only just begun!
