I drove down to Columbia SC from my home in Richmond VA last week for my job. Unfortunatley, had to take it in an unconfortable Ford work van, but less miles off my own van & my 900 Turbo.

Anyways, I stopped at a trucker's custom shop called K&L's chrome shop off I-95's exit 169. All sorts of redneck goodies in there to fix up your big rig! What I found that appealed to me was a wide variety of LED lighting gadgets there. They sold LED replacements for the most common sized light bulbs, in just about any color you can imagine. I boughtLED's for the #194 dashboard lamps for both my astro-van (blue) & my 900 Turbo (green).

Now, I can actually see my gauge cluster at night! I installed two green LED's into the cluster of my SAAB, and was delighted at the output. Because there's a green filter inside the gauge cluster, and the LED puts out pure green light...ALL the light goes through. The other advantage the LED's have is that they have a focused lens housing. Almost all of the green light produced by the LED gets focused on the little mirror inside, and goes to illuminate the instruments. Now, several types of LED shapes can be pruchaced depending on which direction you want the light focused. For a SAAB, get the ordinary round tip ones, that focus the light forward. For other vehicles that may use the side of the light bulb, they make sell a square LED that focuses the light out the side, instead of out the tip.

So, how hard is it to go to LED's? Not hard at all. Thanks to you guys telling me that the cluster's lights can be reached by removing the speaker grill. Just remove the little light socket, and take your old incandescant bulbs out. Replace them with the LED's, and re-install. LED's are polarity sensitive, so if they don't work, just turn the socket over. Re-install your speaker grill, and leave them alone for as long as the car runs...since LED's have a life expectancy of over 30K hours...you may want to remove them before you scrap the car many many years from now!

The price for the LED's is $8.60 for a 2-pack at the truck stop!

If you don't have a K&L in your area...I imagine any other truck stop, or custom car shop will have #194 replacement LED's for about the same price
