Did I just blow the seals on my clutch slave?

Ok, quickly what happened... The clutch pedal has been weak and going to the floor for quite some time. And leaking fluid. I just found that it was a loose hose clamp on the hydraulic line to the slave. Tightened it w/ two new clamps.
Then I go inside the car and push on the clutch to see if the pedal is still lose. Now it is as hard as a rock. Awesome!
BUT, after pushing it a couple times, there is a loud breaking sound and the clutch pedal giving way. It made that sound a couple more times, and now the pedal is totally lose again. I get out of the car, and look at the slave. It is fully extended and completely drenched in brake fluid. In fact, I have never seen the slave so extended before. It just didn't have enough pressure before the push the pressure plate in so far.
I think what happened is that the regained pressure from the fixed hose clamp did in what was a failing slave. My question is... why did the seals blow, and will just throwing in a rebuild kit (the $5 slave rebuild kit I got on eeuroparts) likely fix this problem? And now that there is more pressure, could me clutch master now be under more stress and likely to break?
Thanks for your help,
Rob
