FWIW, your original pump didn't have an internal check valve either.
JohnK will chime in on this as well...and may add to or correct my info. Your original set up has a return line check valve. You can either leave it this way or install your new SUPPLY line check valve (and hollow out your return line one). It's tricky to install these things in this rigid fuel line - someone made a tool and posted it recently - but I used a jumper line of h.p. flexible fuel line and left the plastic stub of the original supply line fitting in place to clamp to.
Short answer....I can't remember which line is which - you can tell with them pulled off the pump because the supply one has an open end - no restriction or ball type check valve. The original return one looks similar to your new supply check valve.
Make sense? Recap, either leave lines alone....or
pry end off original return line check valve and remove ball/obstruction, cut original supply fitting off (or install properly with special tool) just below the elbow. Then splice a jumper of fuel line and clamp to stubbed fitting and new fitting. Plug into pump and go.
Your method may vary...what worked for me may harm you...
Lots of old posts from me, JohnK and others. Search "supply" or "check". Good luck.
