Hello all,
I am hoping somebody here can give me an some ideas, I'm fresh out of them. I have a 1991 Saab 900s, recently purchased as a gift for my fiancee :)
Unfortunately it has this two-fold transmission problem.
The car has trouble shifting itself into Reverse. It seems to shift fine if the car is on uphill slope. If the front of the car is higher than the rear. If the car is on a downhill slope it does not seem to want to go into reverse at all. Instead it just revs like it was in neutral. On a flat service, you have to blip the gas pedal up to around 2k rpm once or twice and then it will shift into reverse.
Simultaneously (and maybe related?) the transmission doesn't like to upshift from 2nd gear into 3rd. It will just sit and rev higher and not upshift. Sometimes it does upshift properly. The car is basically not drivable on the highway as it revs too high.
I have changed the fluid per some of the DIY pages I have found (I used 12 quarts of type F fluid to flush out the transmission fluid in batches of 3 quarts). That didn't help, so I added some "automatic transmission cleaner/slip stopper" that didn't help either.
I don't know exactly what "bands" are or if adjusting them will help at all. I can't honestly afford to spend $2000 on a new tranny right now. If anybody out there has some ideas, or maybe even a diagram or two of this transmission they could email me (thufer3@hotmail.com) I would really appreciate any help.
Thanks in advance.
Sincerely,
Eric (New Saab 900 owner)
P.S. Does anyone know where I can get an extra tranny dipstick for this vehicle the one it came with doesn't appear to be the correct size (although it says Saab on the stick)
