So, I got my nice new headliner material and started looking for adhesive:
What to choose?
1) 3M Super 77 is everywhere, so thought about using that.
2) body shop supply had 3M General Trim adhesive (08088), Spray Trim adhesive (08074) and Super Trim adhesive (08090)
So I bought the Super trim adhesive, since it didn't say not to use it on polyurethane foams (just not polystyrene foam) and that it was good for heavyweight headliners. Then just to be sure, I called a 3M tech. He said NO, their lab recommends it not be used on ANY foams and that the General Trim (08088) is the right stuff to use and definitely DON'T use the Spray Trim or Super 77, since they're only rated to 110 deg. F.
The roof gets hot and the General Trim is rated to 180 deg. F. (like the Super Trim) but the Super Trim has vinyl plasticizer resistors in it (for vinyl exterior roofs)and solvents with no bleed inhibitors, so it'd prob. bleed right through to the fabric, plus maybe eat up the foam.
Luckily, I investigated BEFORE jumping into the job. If I'd bought any of the 110 deg. rated stuff, it'd have worked fine for a while, but eventually broken down from heat.
Moral to the DIYer: "look before you leap"
Moral to 3M - put some "useful" information on the back of your cans. LOL
