I ran into this last summer on a 89 900 turbo. There was a leak in one of the crimped hoses in the area where the hoses attach to the compressor. I found this after I replaced the compressor and updated to R134. I was able to fix the leak by carefully cutting off a portion of the crimped connection sleeve and used a heavy hose clamp. Be sure not to cut off the crimp past where the back of the crimp is on the hose otherwise you can have the hose blow off under presure. The problem with replacing the entire hose assembly is where it attaches to the condensor. This connection looked like it had potential for snapping off. The R134 works fine and is much cheaper than the R12 charge. I would consider having the system pressure tested to find the leak and going to R134 with a new drier and change the oil in the compressor.
