87 900t 170k miles...symptoms:

1st gear will engange with difficulty, but "shudders" violently when in motion and massive loss of power.

2nd gear grinds, grinds, and grinds (like Brittany on Madona at the VMAs)...does not engage at all.

3rd gear feels stiff going in...does not grind, but will pop out of gear if not held in. Feels sluggish with small loss of power.

4th same as third.

5th does not go in without excessive force, just as hard to get out.

Reverse, this is strange, sometimes it can be found but very difficult to get in and out. BUT, if I move more that 2-3 mph in reverse it locks up. I can't remember if this occurs with or without clutch depressed, but I know it doesn't happen moving backwards in nuetral. First I thought this to be a braking/caliper problem, but given all the other situations I going with the trans.

Before I try to tackle the trans/synchros I would like to think I explored easier options first. Any help with where to start would be greatly appreciated.
