As to the wire, replace it with the same or heavier wire. The ground wire (typically Black) would be a heavier wire, and 12 gauge stranded would be just fine. The wire from the Battery light bulb to the alternator (typically yellow or green) is usually thinner - 16 or 18 gauge would be just fine.
I wouldn't put in a redudnant wire - if the wire is bad, replace it with a good wire, and make sure it's well connected at both ends. I've had problems with the Light to Alternator wire (usually Green or Yellow) getting corroded. I just yank it out and put in a new one. By putting in a redundant wire, you've got to get to both ends anyway. Why leave in a 'bad' wire, one that might come loose and short out?
As to places to get wire, you can get insulated stranded hookup wire at Radio Shack, and quite often at most autoparts stores, all in pretty colors. There is no magic, other than to get stranded wire (more flexible). I even see wire at places like Home Depot and Lowe's - DON'T get power wire, like you'd use to wire a house - but they do have insulated stranded wire in smaller sizes.
