The reason you've been told to upgrade to a newer ECU is that the '89 LH 2.4 ECUs have a bad track record of failing - usually it's the transistor that energizes the fuel pump relay that dies after years of being hit by the backpulse from the relay.
To give yourself some more longevity in your ECU, you may want to seriously consider replacing the fuel pump relay and the system relay. These relays have devices in them that absorb the backpulse that results from de-energizing the relay coil. The relays cost under $13 from some of the site sponsors.
You should be able to run an LH 2.4 ECU from any 900T from '89 on. An LH 2.4.2 ECU from a '91-on normally-aspirated C900 isn't much of an option unless you want to do some significant rewiring and parts swapping. It's not a drop-in trade for your LH 2.4, and won't have the fuel mapping that you'd want in a Turbo.
In a pinch, you can use an LH 2.4 ECU from an '88 through '90 900S, and swap in the EPROM from your '89 to keep the fuel mapping of your 900T.
I ran an ECU from a '90 900S in my '89 SPG for about 6 months with no problems. I also successfully tested LH 2.4 ECUs from '88 900S, '90 900T, '89 9000T, and '89 900S.
