Gas issues on road trip, bad gas?

Hello y'all. Just returned from 1300 mile road trip and experienced some trouble. I have a 91 SPG w/140K. I have had the vehicle for 2 years and never put anything less than 92 octane in it. On the road late at night, was forced to fill up in the middle of nowhere in SD. The best gas was 89 octane, 10% ethanol. The check engine light came on and the engine was hesitant. I also noticed a strong fuel smell in the cabin. Anyone else have experiences like this? I fueled up the next day with some 91 octane, no ethanol and no problems. TIA.
