it's really just two U-joints with a piece of cubic plastic in the center...two little pins through the cubic plastic bit act as journals and snap into each of the U-joints. Very unlikely the cardan joint itself is 'loose,' it's probably the fit of the joint to the rod from the dash or the rod from the heater valve. I think the heater valve rod is metal so you're unlikely to have worn it down; the problem is more likely on the rod from the dash knob. One poster is right...you can actually see the cardan joint through the upper left radio speaker and surely feel where the slop is with your left hand on the joint and the right hand operating the heater valve knob.
