I get the clutch back in, and put all the crap back on it (air tubes, etc). I go to start it. All I hear is the click of the starter solenoid. (Starter is brand new, as is ignition switch).
So I jump the car with my dad's Sable, which is a slightly larger battery, should be no problem. The starter motor engages for about .0001 seconds, then EVERYTHING electrical in the car goes dead. Absolutely everything. Not dim das lights, NO dash lights. etc. Then I try a few minutes later, and the dash lights up again but no starter solenoid click even. All fuses are okay.
So then for about 2 hours of fiddling with different wires trying to figure out what the hell is wrong, I decide to jump the car with THREE batteries. I used the Sable, and Saab batteries, plus a portable jumpstart battery of about 650 amps. This actually started the car after a few cranks.
I then unhook all batteries but the Saab battery, and the car runs fine. Voltmeter reads a little over 12 volts with headlights on, car idling. I let it idle for 15 minutes, then realize that the temperature gauge is about 1/4" over the red peg. Hmm, not good. Check fans... not running (and I DID plug them in).
So then I shut the car off, and attempt to start using only the Saab battery this time. Again, the starter cranks te engine over maybe half a time and thats it.
It would seem that there is a short somewhere in the positive circuit. I actually removed the fat battery--->starter cable, inspected it, and reattached it on top of the car (temporarily) and that did not help.
My only theory as to the short circuiting (though no blown fuses?!) is that right after I put the clutch in, I very carefully used a garden hose to wash some aluminum shavings out of the drivers side fender well area, like under where the intercooler and air filter sit. I'm thinking that there is a wiring harness in there, and that possibly there is a positive wire in there that is not fused and is shorting out on the frame via moisture. Maybe it will dry and everything will be good tomorrow. Ugh.
Any advice (besides eliminating the garden hose from my DIY tool kit) would be greatly appreciated.
Good nite.
