Well the first tool I would strongly suggest you acquire is the Tranny Chapter of the Factory Service Manual. I got mine at the dealer three years ago for $17. It is very thorough and useful IMO.
The manual shows you tons of tools that you might need. I ended up using almost no special tools, but i did not replace my pinnion bearing since it was in good shape. You can take apart the tranny and put it together without special tools, but if you start replacing bearings, synchros and other parts, the number of tools you need will skyrocket.
All the tools are pretty expensive also, since they are like for pros. What I did was find a friendly tranny rebuild place (one that has atleast some Saab experience if possible) and pay them to do some of the harder stuff, like change the pinnion bearing and make sure the differential and pinnion are seated well against each other.
