In addition to being a Saab buff I'm also in the car business and I see so many people paint themselves into a corner with the old "it ain't worth fixin" angst. Think of it this way, in good running condition your car has the same intrinsic value as a new $40,000. Saab convertible--it will in essense do eveything it will do. Or another way of looking at it is that if you sell your car for next to nothing because of it's problem, and add $1500.(the cost of fixing it)to that, what could you buy that would be as nice to drive as a Saab Convertible? Nothing! All you can buy is another car that's on it way to some other big expensive repair--sooner or later. If you can put $1,500 into any car a get as little as another year of diving out of it, it's a bargain compared to buying another car.
