Greetings all,
My 87 900s (just rolled 100k) is dying without warning. It can be in motion or stopped. When this happens, the engine rpms just head to the 0. It's not like my previous experinces of complete ignition failure (a 99), it's seems more gradual dying. (I thought first fuel pressure, then I thought perhaps tank-venting problems with full fuel) There's no backfire, no stuttering--perhaps a little--just like power was strangled until it dies without protest. Then again, this may be perception, not useful information.
The earlier times, the car would start instantly. In fact, at cruise, I would cycle the ignition (on/off, no start) and just let momentum re-crank the engine. Now, however, restarting is becoming very difficult. This morning was the first time it was dead at start-up when it was running fine at shutdown Friday evening.
There are no indications of anything wrong other than the engine dying.
This morning, while it was in a "dead" state, I put a volt-meter on the leads to the fuel pump, and I got voltage there while cranking, but not while merely on. (I thought the fule pump was energized pretty much all of the time?) That should prove that--when reading the voltage--my ECU and both relays were working, right?
Then it spontaneously HEALED itself (again) but I persisted in checking the fuel-pump and ECU relays. The fuel pump relay (aft-most of the pair) seemed pretty warm, about 100 degrees, and it was under 70 at the time of this observation.
When running, the car seems as normal as the other 900s I had (an 86), and sure the idle sucks, but it shows no sign of crappy anything other than the AIC. I did NOT get to check the ignition this morning, so that might still be an issue.
Recent history: We had problems with the relays for either the Fuel Pump or ECU, so a local shop replaced them both. (Generic relays at a HUGE markup, but he deserved the $$ for patience with us.)
I'm off to drive it around and hope it dies. My thoughts: On assuredly dying, I'm going to recheck those relays, and look for spark.
For all of you: How do I know if its the AMM? (Had a horrible time with an 85 Volvo: replaced both fuel pumps, filter, plugs points etc, and it was the AMM the whole time) ECU? (The ECU is a known good used one replaced a year ago to fix a random non-starting problem that turned out to be those relays. Reputable--actually EXCELLANT--shop too, wonder why they didn't try the relays first?) Fuel Pump? Fuel filter?
What else?
Thanks,
Ben
