here's a tip - never pet a burning dog! Posted by saabu [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Anybody have good tips on bushing installation?, RS ![]() ![]() |
haha when working on these bushings you have to have a laugh.
first, a tip for everyone on pressing the old ones out: press on the sleeve only, not the bushing. they will come out easier.
check out http://www.twinsaabs.com for their DIY on installation.
use the 'piston ring compressor' trick.
we did and the uppers went in lickety split, with medium force.
however, the lowers did not cooperate as much, for a couple of reasons:
when in a press or vice, the width of the bushing and the mount are both greater than the uppers, making the whole thing rather tippy and prone to making the bushing go in crooked. we tried the ring compressor thing and it just would not work. warped one bushing and ruined another. then stopped to think about it.
if you just press on the top of the bushing, even if you use the ring compressor thing, it's going to tip because there is nothing guiding it in straight.
i think the solution, looking again at the Twinsaabs site, is a subtle little point Jeff makes, in that they put a 3/8 '' extension INSIDE the bushing, to press on. i think the idea is to use the length of the extension to keep the bushing going in straight.
my further thought is that if there is any slop between the extension and the mount, putting a socket on the OTHER end of the extension just smaller than the mount diameter will reduce the extension from angling, and the bushing will have no choice but to go in straight.
just be glad you didn't ruin a $25 poly bushing - the rubber ones are cheap!
hope that helps, pls post a follow up because i've yet to do my lowers.
