Looking back at some of the pre NHSTA American Steel that I owned, i am amazed that as many drivers survived accidents as actually did.
The dash on my '56 Chrysler had lots of eye-popping protrusions on the front of its cast aluminum dash and the ergonomics were horrendous. The '53 Studebaker had a curved, formed-steel upper dash that could have put a crease in your forehead the size of the Grand Canyon if you ever hit it.
NHSTA did a lot of good for the interior safety of US-market cars. IMHO, the problem with the SAAB dash materials were the result of a kind of naievete' about the temperature effects in markets outside of Sweden. We'll see how the softer, thicker skin materials in modern dashes hold up in the very long-term. As irritating as the cracks are, I feel that they did the best they could with the budget and materials they had in the late '70s. The worst C900 dashes are still in better condition than many MG dashes I've seen.
I totally agree with you about the mods to the US-market BL cars driving them into bankruptcy. Those mods they made to comply were absolutely hideous - and the individual BL marques were even smaller than SAAB. But, we did the same sort of thing to the British aviation industry. So much for being kindred allies, eh?
Ahh, the leaper. I look back to the swept-winged eagle hood ornament on my '56 Chrysler and the hood ornaments on Chevys of the same era and the first words that come to mind are "pedestrian ripper." Ford must have done some heavy-duty politicing to get the cat approved.
