1990 900 150,000mi

I let my rear pads got WAY too low - there was essentially nothing left on the outside pads and the inside ones had about worn off 2/3rd from new. So 7mm hex, other tools, and Bentley book I sat down to do my first brake pad replacement.
Left side went smoothly, no damage to the rotor (inside or out) but I did have to loosen the 4mm piston adjustment screw almost all the way inorder to get the new pads on. 1) Was this a mistake?

I went to the right side and quickly realized that the last person who did the rear brakes was nice enough to leave off the piston adjustment screw PLUG. Therefore, the piston adjustment screw was rotted out beyond use! I ordered a new (rebuilt) caliper.

I got the new caliper and luckily had no problem getting the old one off and lost just and ounce of brake fluid. Then the real problem arose. I loosened the 4mm piston adjustment screw all the way, but the brake pads were still too close together to fit over the Rotor. I don't have a super large pair of piers to squeese in the piston, but it is only sticking out by less than an 1/8th of an inch. So, I took the old inside pad that has 1/3 of a pad left and used that in conjuction with a new outside pad. Then easily installed the caliper back onto the rotor and tighened down the 4mm piston adjustment screw until just before the pads started touching the rotor. 2) did I do something wrong? 3) any repercussions to this match up? 4) how far until I can install a new inside pad?
