fiberglass madness strikes again!

My 82T special edition came with the rubber air foil that sits atop the trailing edge of the trunk. Over time I've watched it develop lumps just over one of the internal bolt units which attach it to the trunk. Rust. Well, this week the rubber split open. Time for a new foil. I figured finding a good used one would be next to impossible, so looked to option B which is make a new one out of fiberglass. The idea is to use the existing foil to make a mold first. The trick with that, of course, is to make sure the resin doesn't adhere to the part, making seperation messy. Car wax is often used in the fiberglass business, so that's what I used on the rubber surface. And it worked! The first layer of resin and glass peeled off easily. I don't anticipate a problem recreating an exact duplicate of the rubber foil, with the only tricky part being the bottom piece, where I'll have to be sure to carefully refit the metal bolt studs so they will perfectly line up with the existing trunk lid holes. I've determined the bottom piece will be glued on to the foil base seperately, after carefully cutting (Dremel tool time) and sanding the mating surfaces for an exact fit. Then it's a smooth as glass sanding all over the foil surface and a flat black paint job to finish. Just a nice Saturday afternoon's worth of work while listening to college ball games. And yes, there will be a beverage break or two.
