on 'net car forums, synth vs. dino discussions can be like true believers vs. athiests; debate, argument - whatever you wish to call it - is pointless between two POVs that are diametrically opposed.
i'm mostly on the dino side:
**dino is cheap, even @ 3000 mile change intervals (Saab specs *7500* miles)
**dino oil protects plenty well; just look to all those folks out there who've put hundreds of thousands of miles on their saabs, volvos, mercedes, hondas, toyotas and the like over the years. my favorite anecdotal bit is about the guy with the 2 million mile volvo p1800 whose first re-build was at 650,000 miles. think he was running synth back in the '60s-'70s? doubt it. another anecdote i like is about the 99gl i had years back that went nearly 340,000 before i sold it. car ran on dino.
for really hard use (racing), synthetics will stand up better to heat. however, a racer will usually change the oil after each event. few club racers can afford synth each weekend.
bring on the synth sales pitch/flame/whatever...
