Hey Pat-
I would have to say (and will be promptly corrected if wrong – one of the best things about this list!!!), that your pump is a goner. If the pump is actually moving the top down (the least strenuous of its’ duties), but fails to go back up without aid, all the arrows point to pump-failure.
Check the oil level, keeping in mind however, that if this were the main culprit, the noise generated by the pump would be horribly loud in contrast to the correct, near silent, operation it should do.
Now the bad, bad news: in order replace the pump correctly and bleed the hydraulic system per the factory’s recommendations (others have cheated this, some with good results, some negative), you need to remove the entire system (all the lines, pistons, pump, etc.) not a fun job, and the pumps aren’t cheap.
As far as your heating issue, pull out the drivers side front speaker assembly from atop the dash (there are two screws. Remove them and lift up on the edge of the grill that you removed the screws from, and it slides towards you with the speaker attached, remove it carefully in order not to break the locating tabs closest to the windshield), and confirm that the metal rod going from the heater temp control knob is indeed connected and turning the heater control valve. The rod (when seated in the drivers seat), will be on your right obviously, and simply move the temp control knob back and forth to locate it. My ’87 always flips this rod off if I’m not gentle in the way I turn it. It's weird...
Good luck,
JS
