From a purely economic standpoint, at $1 or per quart of dino oil w/ 3 quarts or so in the transmission, it works out to be incredibly cheap to change the transmission oil a few times a year as compared with the specialty oils. The time spent is negligable to me. I'd just be surfing TSN, working on my tan, or spending time at the pick-n-pull (Hey, wait. that's the same thing :-).
I'd prefer to squeeze a few more tens of thousands of miles life out of the transmission by draining the bearing-chewing metal particles out of the transmission case. IMO, that's more critical than the shifting benefits for the specialty oils. Of course, I'm not pushing way-beyond-stock Hp through the SPG transmission either. In those Hp territories, it's every man to his own devices.
Here in ATL, I don't have any trouble with cold shifting 'cause it never gets cold enough to matter. Even back in Syracuse NY, I never had any shifting problems during very cold weather.
