86 900 turbo smokes bad!!!! what is it!! replaced turb

hello a few years back io bought a nice 900 86 turbo from a frinds shop. replaced the engine with one from a reputable saab specialist in my area. when i got it all set up is smoked pretty bad. so i got a turbo from another pretty decent saab specialist used. it still smoked. and i mean black sooty belching clouds of smoke. but compression is great 155 in all!! at this point i had to many other projects and postponed working on this till now abou 2-3 years later. need to finally do something with it and want it to go to a good home. another guy i know and trust sold me a rebuilt turbo out of a just wrecked car. the turbo really seemed nice upon inspection. he swore it didnt smoke. when i put it in it ran clean for about the fist 30 mins or so. then it slowly started to belch more smoke until finally now. its just about as bad as it was. is there a definative way to test if its the turbo smoking or just really bad valve seals or headgasket? can the headgasket leak oil badly adn still have good compression ? that my main question i guess. i hav had several of these and never had an engine probem , this is my first on a saab (though i have rebuilt engines in countless other makes) and its a real pain. thnx for any help
