I had that years ago in my 92 900S n/a. Check:
- that the temp sending switch gasket has not deteriorated and allows coolant to pass when cold, then stop when hot. Its the screw in sensor on the upper left of the radiator, you may see a small trail of dried coolant running down from it. Gasket can be bought, but I would replace the sensor and gasket as a precaution. Sometimes just tightening it works.
- check the hose connections for the same issue, loose when cold. Also check the 90 degree bent small hose at the front of the head by the distributor. It could be failing and weeping.
- finally, the radiator could be failing, the plastic sides could be separating from the aluminum body, and replacement is necessary. Leaking coolant from the fin assembly could be a problem and is burning off, you can't see it behind the grill and ac evaporator. I got an all metal replacement from sobstory, but I would recommend that you request the aluminum unit. My car seems to run hotter/the cooling fans more frequently since the swap to the all metal (copper/brass?) unit.
Sometimes the condensation on your hood can run in the front of the grill as you move forward and it generates some steam as it hits the warming radiator, usually at your first stoplight. That is benign. But the fact that you are smelling coolant indicates that you have some work to do.
Hope this helps.
