I'm looking for some more input on the issues I've been having with drivability. Back in the late Spring I started having problems with an overly rich condition. Prior to obtaining the coveted Bentley Manual I tried a few tricks that I knew of previously and a few other tricks from some people on this board. Overall my symptoms were, rough idle when cold, black smoke on exhaust, when cold. After warm up it would run pretty well, not perfect, but it is 20 years old so I wrote it off. I eventually replaced the O2 sensor since I thought is was cheap and I'm fairly certain it had never been changed before (143,000 Miles). After I changed this it ran great at start up and great after that. However, in hard acceleration it hesitates and sputters and at completely random times it'll start running really crappy and start spewing black smoke. Then, after a while it will run OK. Obviously this grounds my car since I don't trust it. The items below have been checked and re-checked:
Thermo-time Switch - Replaced
Aux. Air Valve - Replaced
02 Sensor - Replaced
Throttle Housing - cleaned thoroughly, everything cleaned, from the air intake to the throttle housing.
New Air filter
New fuel filter
Vacuum pressure tested OK.
All relays checked out except Cold/Hot Start Relay. I think the Bentley manual is wrong as the 'opened' and 'closed' status on the chart were the exact opposite. I'm thinking it was written for Thermal switches with all but white tops (they close and open opposite that of the other swithes).
Also, I readjusted the %CO mixture at the fuel distributor with my dwell meter. If anyone has experience in this let me know as I did so, but my dwell was fluctuating between 41 and 52. It was very difficult to get it to range between 40-50 at 875 RPM's as recommended, But I got as close as I could. Should the dwell angle be more stable? Is this indicative of a problem? Or is this normal?
Sorry this is so long, but I feel I'm getting close, but I can't quite nail it down. TIA for your help!
