1988 saab 900s 4 door manual 16v
Been having idle problems and told that if the idle quits hunting and levels off after warming up then a vacuum leak could be a prime suspect. After letting the car warm up the idle leveled off right at 800 RPMS, with very very mild hunting, just enough for the tach needle to move.
Anyway I started playing with air controls because I remembered getting a higher pitch crescendoing "waaaaaaaaa" sound from loud to quiet from the passenger side after letting off the accelerator. The sound is produced regardless of how hard the accelerator is push, just as soon as I let up it comes. I started to play with the air controls and it would not make the sound if it was set on defrost, but it would for any other setting. Also if it is set on 0 i can hear a consistent "pshhhhhh" sound. Neither of the sounds seemed to vary with the fan speed. But if i had the air control set on the two big horizontal arrows(one setting up from the 0) and the fan set on one, it would blow as if the fan was on 3. Also with the defrost there is a rapid knocking sound, it is not loud or anything and only happens on defrost.
I am wondering if any of these could be symptoms of a vacuum leak.
Thanks
