When my rack was leaking, my mechanic said it was fine to drive and wasn't going to suddenly fail leaving me with no steering ability. According to him, it would just get progressively worse, and the steering would get progressively worse until i got sick of it, or was no longer able to control the car easily.

But it's a progressive thing, not suddenly driving down the road, and BAM. Even if the power steering fails, you can still manually steer the car. It's not easy, though.. As my mother puts it, "three men and a small boy to turn the wheel."

I got my rack changed at the price of $500 after alignment, and man was it stiff for a while. I drained the over-filled ps fluid, and after a while it has loosened up. Of course now it feels like it did before the change. Yay for lifetime warranty.
