I bought an 89' convertible this past spring, spent weekends all summer doing stuff like a complete auto->manual conversion, head gasket, every seal I could get at, and more. Put it all back together and it wouldn't start, played with it for a while then got fed up, and it's sat since then.
I was certain I had not messed with the timing at all - when I pulled the head, I ziptied the cam sprockets to the chain, and never moved the crank until the engine was back on. Timing marks all lined up, flywheel and cam sprocket marks.
Today, on the advice of my mechanic, I once again set the engine to TDC and checked all the marks - then I popped off the cap of the distributor and checked its position: it was pointing at the NUMBER 4 plug wire! Now I got the wiring schematics from the Bentley and from this site, and everything showed I had it hooked up correctly. But, I reversed the wires (Plugged 1 into where 4 should have been, 3 into 2, etc) and i'll be damned if it didn't fire up and purr like a kitten on the first crank. Idles fine, revved it up and all sounds normal. Tomorrow I start reinstalling the interior and then we'll try driving.
My question: Is it possible that the bottom end of the engine is a complete 360 degree rotation (180 degrees of camshaft rotation) off? I found other "GM-Ized" touches in the car from prior work done by someone who did _not_ know their stuff. By switching the plug wires to the "wrong" position to match the "wrong" engine position, did I fix the problem? Everything seems to run fine - am I looking at problems down the road? It ran fine when I bought it like this, save for a bad auto tranny.
Thanks in advance!
