I think it's the hall-effects sensor/wiring. I had the same problem. the wiring on the inside of the distributor was corroded and shorting on the distributor housing. I was having very similar problems as the ones you describe! The plug on the side of the distributor was also all falling apart and brittle. I got a whole new kit off http://www.eeuroparts.com for about a hundred bucks and installed it myself with a pair of c-clip pliers (to take the distributor apart.) When you take the distributor off, mark a line on the head and then on the distributor shaft so that you can get it lined up properly on re-installation. This way your engine timing will be more-or-less the same.
I am 90% sure it's the hall effects sensor...from many hours of frustrating troubleshooting on my own '86 SPG.
Hope this helps!
