A previous experience with a different car: CE light came on, pulled code, it was for the knock sensor. The parts guy (good friend, didn't just sell us another sensor) said to clean the contact between the sensor and the block: some sort of piezometric contact that can be altered by corrosion.
The standard test for a knock sensor is to hook up a timing light or just listen and slap the head with a hammer or mallet near the sensor and see if it adjusts the timing.
It may also be possible an oily distributor-retaining bolt has worked its way loose and the timing slipped.
Hope it helps.
