odd fuel delivery problem

I call this problem odd because it is outside my experience of Saab issues. Here is the story from the beginning. Fuel pump went about a month ago when I was out of town on my 93 900S 2.1 5sp (110k mi). Had it replaced by a reputable Saab-only mechanic; they replaced the fuel filter and all the related seals. During my 300 mile drive home I noticed a slight odor of gasoline. Attributed this to the fuel system being opened. Over the last month the scent of gasoline has come and gone, though I can’t establish a pattern. Yesterday the check engine light came on. Read out the fault codes, which indicated that the engine was running too lean. Got curious and exposed the top of the fuel pump to check for leaks. Sure enough there was a pool of gasoline sitting on top of the pump. Not sure if the leak is caused by bad or poorly installed seals, or a leak caused by a too much pressure from a blockage somewhere else in the system. Pump sounds like it’s straining so I’m inclined to think a blockage but I’m not sure where to look. Thought the fuel filter, but it’s only 3,000 miles old. Any ideas about what to check? This happen to anyone else? Thanks. Nervous about even driving it to my mechanic because of the fuel in the car.
