Exception is shocks although they can generally be characterized by inspection/driving. If they have 50+K or 5 years on them, or KYB's with maybe 20K, consider replacing them. One thing you might consider is replacing the bumpstops...if you look in the coil spring at the top and see a split bump stop or otherwise deteriorated piece of rubber (sometimes they're even missing!), time to replace them. They're about $65 each and require removal of the coil spring, not an especially hard job, just tedious. The bump stops allow a certain amount of suspension travel past the apparent tip of the bumpstop before they get really hard, probably somewhere around an inch at the coil spring, maybe 1.5" at the wheel.
With a bad/gone bumpstop you get the increased travel but when it hits it hits very hard. BTDTGTTS!
