Sounds like you just had to rewind the belt inside the spool so it aligned better and didn't bind on the way in.
I had this problem with my old brick, but that was because after 212,0000 miles and associated seat-belt-pullings the mechanism began to wobble side to side and the teeth engaged. I really prefer this failure mode to the other one, the 740 where it pulled out on more than one occasion.
With the Saabs it's never been a problem- dad always forgets to pull it back in the housing though.
Also later cars with pretensioners probably got stronger springs- just my guess.
