I'm a former SAAB owner (several cool 96's, years ago) who's considering going back into the fold - and purchasing a 1987 turbo Convertible. The beast has 174K miles on it - a lot - but has been well maintained by a conscientious owner for the last 25K miles. Right after she purchased it, the auto trans went out - and she had it replaced with a good manual trans which she said works beautifully and shifts better than the manual box on her newer (96) Saab Convert. I asked her about some of the other classic Saab issues - CV joints and head gaskets - but she wasn't aware of any problems with either of these (not that she's mechanically inclined). The only area which she thought might need some attention in the near future was brakes, which she said felt a little squeaky. I haven't actually test driven the vehicle yet but will soon.
I realize that buying a quirky high performance vehicle with relatively high miles is a bit of a gamble - but wanted to solicit opinions from fellow Saab owners and drivers about the pluses and minuses. One big plus, BTW, is the price - which in my opinion seems extremely reasonable (under $2K). So what am I in for?
Also, for comparison purposes, I'm looking at another vehicle next week - a 93 SAAB Turbo Convert with a higher price tag (around $5500) but much lower miles (around 76K) and a rebuilt head. Given that this newer (93) Saab costs nearly 3 times as much as the other (87) - is/will it be worth more?
All opinions appreciated, no matter how prejudiced or subjective they may be!
