I concluded that I needed a longer RH side driveshaft. A year ago I upgraded the stock 82 solid rotor front discs to vented discs that were pulled from an 87. Both spindles from the 87 were also necessary to do the job, but I kept the 82 outer drive shafts, which are appearantly a tad shorter than the 87 shaft, which places the tripod bearing dangerously close to the outer edge of the right side inner driver cup. When turning sharply while accelerating, I've actually heard the bearing slip. So I've been on the lookout for an appropriate replacement of the right size. I found one just yesterday at a local j-yard.
When I approached the car, someone was already working on it. Working on the right side suspension, in fact. The entire spindle was hanging down at that point and I was concerned he was taking "my" drive shaft. But he was merely after the upper and lower control arms. What a gift - someone doing all the dirty work of removing the spindle from the control arms so all I had to do was undo the tie rod ball joint, pull the entire spindle with drive shaft out on the ground, slide the rubber boot back to expose the CV joint, work the snap ring and pull the drive shaft free from the spindle. I didn't even get dirty. That's never happened before. It's always a big mess. The guy who pulled the control arms from that car while I watched and advised, now he was a mess.
An interesting note about how he removed the front suspension spring. He didn't have a spring compressor, and even with all the bolts removed, the spring locked the upper arm in it's place, tight against the chassis. He simply slid a pry bar through the spring and locked one end against the chassis somewhere and pushed against the other end and out popped the spring with a boing.
With the tripod bearing free, I was curious about the inner driver bearing surfaces. They were severely worn at the points of contact. The car wasn't a turbo either. That must have been one noisy ride and no doubt one of the reasons it was in that j-yard.
