the solenoid will make a clattering noise. I'll bet Jim at sobstory 800-583-0370 has some good used ones, since the rarely fail. When the solenoid clatters the transducer is often the problem. Before you replace the solenoid, I would look for a bad vac/pressure hose or pressure transducer. Check the hose going from the intake that goes through the firewall to the pressure transducer under the dash. You can test the transducer with a source of air pressure, like a mity-vac. Resistance across the transducer terminals should vary smoothly as pressure increases(sorry, don't have specs in front of me, but you might try searching on pressure transducer to find a post with the specs).

Also make sure all electrical connectors to the APC computer and solenoid are clean and tight.

the only other thing I can think of is a bad BPV valve(hooter valve) down near the turbo. They won't clatter but maybe you might get a popping noise under pressure if the diaphram is shot.
