Yes, it is possible 2 ways. I recently did this on my 1991 900 SPG. There is a drain plug at the bottom of the gear box, and the gear box has a cover plate on the rear. The car needs to be jacked up and placed on stands due to the location of the gearbox. The drain plug requires a large hex head to remove, so I just loosened the bolts for the coverplate on the back of the gearbox. I placed an oil pan underneath and allowed the box to drain. There is a bolt on the passenger side of the gearbox (below the exhaust manifold) that is used to check the fluid level and also fill the gearbox. Allow the gearbox to drain, tighten the coverplate back down, and refill the gearbox (approx. 3 quarts of oil). The gears shifted much smoother afterward. Hope it helps.
