OK, i think i will give this a try, but won't have time until the weekend after this one, so i'll be sure to post back with my results.
Two Questions:
1) Do i need new gaskets when i reinstall the valve cover? Bentley says i will need some hi-temp silicon sealer; will i also need new gaskets?
2) Is the valve cover pad (the thing that is likely hard) the same as the top timing chain guide or is that something different? I've searched on a few sites to see a pic of what it looks like but i can't seem to find a pic of the pad.
BTW, besides saying that the timing chain was the source of the noise, he DID say that i needed a new chain (again, this was without looking at it, only listening to the noise). I've been told this mechanic is VERY knowledgable about Saabs (and that's all he works on) but i've learned from this board that often mechanics go 'overboard' (like replacing entire fuel pump assemblies instead of just the pre-pump, replacing AIC valves instead of trying to clean them first, etc, etc). Even if the mechanic is right and the chain needs replacing (although this board seems to state that this is rarely the case... and i change my oil every 2500 miles), at least i'll have peace of mind knowing that i checked it myself and i didn't waste money on an unnecessary rapair.
I continue to be thankful for everyone's help.
